  • Are you aware of the appropriate or inappropriate language to use when consulting or addressing textured hair clients?
  • Do you want to build confidence around conversations about textured hair?
  • Do you understand the cultural or historical bias associated with textured hair?

This module talks about the elephant in the room.
Students will learn about appropriate and inappropriate language to use when consulting or addressing textured hair clients. This course will dive into the specifics of how to confidently have sensitive conversations with textured hair clients.

In this module, participants will gain knowledge about the geographical, cultural and ethnic origins of curly hair as well as current demographics and statistics. Students will learn the historical implications of curly hair, particularly Black or "afro" hair, from its origin to slavery in the Americas and colonisation in Africa. We will explore the Human Rights and Civil Rights movements and how curly hair has been a relevant part of social and political conversations for generations. Students will leave this module with an understanding of the social stigmas around curly hair and will be equipped with the appropriate language to combat negative stereotypes within themselves and empower their clients.
